Museum of Man

By sandbag | Published June 14th, 2011

Even if you’re not a people person, a visit to Balboa Park’s Museum of Man should be on your short list of places to visit while in San Diego. Once in Balboa Park, it’s easy to find because the museum is located beneath the ornate 200-foot California Tower. With its Spanish colonial and mission-style architecture, the building was originally constructed for the 1915-16 Panama-California Exposition.

This is the city’s only museum devoted to anthropology and archaeology. In addition to cultural collections and physical anthropology collections, the museum features five permanent exhibition: Ancient Egypt; Kumeyaay: Native Californians; Footsteps Through Time: Four Million ears of Human Evolution; Maya: Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth; and Discover Egypt. Check the museum’s website (www.museumofman.org) to see a list of changing exhibits.

With more than 100,000 documented ethnographic items, nearly 50,000 photographic images, and 33,000 scientific publications, the museum offers something for everyone. The primary ethnographic collections focus on the Western Hemisphere, with strengths in California, the Southwest, Mexico, and western South America. Other important collections include Alaska, the Northwest Coast, the Plains, Central America, and lowland South America. Physical anthropology is represented with skeletal collections of ancient and modern bone diseases, as well as casts documenting human variations.

Make sure to bring your kids and let them take a giant step back into the intrigue and mystery of Egypt in the Children’s Discovery Center, where children can enjoy hands-on exploration of this fascinating ancient culture.

Visit the San Diego Museum of Man Store where you’ll find a selection of unusual ethnic merchandise of high quality for the collector or the novice.

If you plan to spend more than a day in San Diego, buy a Passport to Balboa Park, which offers visitors the chance to experience 14 museums in the park with a savings of more than 50%. If you only plan a one-day trip, then buy a Balboa Park Stay-for-the-Day Pass to visit five museums for just $35. For more adventure, purchase a Passport to Balboa Park with Zoo Admission. Visit http://sandiego.balboapark.org/1357_attraction-tickets_a352.html?ticketID=1349 to purchase any of the three.

USS Midway

By sandbag | Published May 25th, 2011

Whether you’re retired military, a history buff, or someone who holds great respect for anyone who’s served to protect our great country, a tour of the USS Midway, moored at the Navy Pier in downtown San Diego, is for you. Go to sea without leaving port and walk in the footsteps of 225,000 Midway sailors who served our country and upheld the American ideals of strength, freedom, and peace..

The USS Midway, a aircraft carrier of the U.S. Navy, was the first to be commissioned after the end of World War II. Active in the Vietnam War and in Operation Desert Storm, she is currently a museum ship at the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum, in San Diego.

Since being opened to the public in 2004, visitors may tour the ship’s bridge, flight deck, hangar deck, mess deck, primary flight control, Tactical Flag Command Center, enlisted and junior officer quarters, the captain’s and admiral’s quarters, sickbay, and an engine room. Additionally, several restored aircraft are on display on the hangar deck and on the flight deck. Self-guided audio tours are provided with admission. It’s an opportunity to explore more than 60 exhibits with a collection of 27 restored aircraft.

Those who dare can “take to the sky” aboard one of three flight simulators. Live the life of an aviator aboard the USS Midway. Launch off the flight deck, engage the enemy and then return safely.

The USS Midway Museum features the Fantail Café — offering a family-pleasing menu. For those who want the real “grub,” look for menu items made from USS Midway’s 1945 cook book. Take home USS Midway memorabilia by visiting the museum’s gift shop, located on the hangar deck where sailors once repaired jet engines.

Tours of the USS Midway are for all ages. The New Family Audio Tour is perfect for the little skippers. Families can follow Airman Sam Rodriguez as they take youngsters on an amazing and entertaining audio tour to more than 30 locations throughout the aircraft carrier.

The USS Midway Museum is dedicated to a complete experience for all guests. Approximately 60 percent of the museum’s exhibits are wheelchair accessible. Complimentary, loaner wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Million dollar Jackpot for Golden Village Palms resident

By sandbag | Published May 19th, 2011

George Hayes, a resident at Golden Village Palms in Hemet, went on a desert casino-hopping trip with a friend. Fantasy Springs was their last stop before heading home. George simply walked up to a 1¢ Super Spin Wheel of Fortune® machine and put in $40 or $50. Not long after that, he watched five Wheel of Fortune® symbols line up across the center line and knew it had to mean something big. That “something big” turned out to be $1,127,123.88.

“Today is my wife’s birthday,” Hayes said. “She passed away a number of years ago. In 1985, she won a jackpot at a Las Vegas casino for $250,000, which happened to be on my birthday. Seems like it’s happened again, only the other way around.”

Hayes said he and his friend make casino-hopping trips every few weeks. On this trip, it was their turn to hit the casinos in the Palm Springs area.

He said there was nothing special that stood out about the Wheel of Fortune game, but he just walked right up and started playing it.

Congratulations to George!
